Our friend Diego Abarca grows and processes coffee in Tarrazu, Costa Rica on his family land at around 1600 masl. A driven young producer, Diego has built his micro-mill, Alto San Juan, with his brother in order to maintain quality control and consistency. He continues to invest in his farm and mill to improve his coffees.

2017 was the first time that Eric traveled to Costa Rica and it has since resulted in two of our strongest relationships in the coffee industry. Deep in the hills of Tarrazu and at the end of the road is Alto San Juan Micro Mill; a cornerstone of the Tarrazu coffee industry and home to the Abarca Family. We first met Diego Abarca when he was 23 years old and operating his family farm. Since that time he has developed San Calletano; a cloud kissed hillside in Tarrazu that consists of 12 different lots that he selects for special preparation to be sold as micro lots. Diego's work ethic and vision make him one of the most exciting producers we work with year after year. He’s in love with the work he does and has followed his beans back to the source, visiting us on two different occasions to connect with customers and see the place where his coffee is enjoyed.

Our other relationship in Costa Rica is nestled in the Central Valley. Oscar and Francisca Chacon are legendary producers not only in Costa Rica, but all over the world. Arriving at their home every year we are intoxicated by the smell of ferment and the richness of their hospitality. We have been drawn to their coffee year after year because of the intention they put into producing clean, bright and flavorful natural and honey processed coffees. They are truly the pinnacle of processing and we are honored to buy their coffee and to call them friends.
